We are a society of Salt Addicts. It cannot be denied. When you look at the things we do and the places we hang out then the occurrence of Salt is almost the constant factor.

How many times have you said to your friends and work colleagues that such and such a place is great to hang out in after to work, to relax etc?

They serve great cocktails and canapes, nibbles call them whatever. Yes they are great, and funnily enough the consumption of these just makes you want to consume more and drink even more (alcohol, soft drinks whatever) and do you know why?

Yes, you have got it, it is because they are virtually made out of salt. OK, slight exaggeration here for effect, but a major ingredient that makes these snacks so delicious certainly is the salt.

The recommended total daily intake of salt for adults is 5 grams or less. This best viewed as a slightly heaped teaspoonful. The other factor to beware of in all of this is to take into consideration the hidden salt that lies within the rest of the food that we eat in processed or packaged foods. These hidden amounts alone leave very little room for the addition of salt at our table or within the processes of cooking. If we are not very careful we could find ourselves consuming between 200 and 400 percent more salt as we need without trying.

The addition of salt to our food at the table is in a great many cases almost an involuntary habit and cutting this out is not easy to start but once the process of elimination is embarked upon most people find it hard to believe how salty the food that we consume actually is.

Leave salt off the table as a condiment and cut down by 50 percent the amount used in cooking as a start and take it from there. The most obvious offenders in the salt intake sakes are Fast Foods such as Hamburgers, cooked meats; savoury snacks etc but Bread, tinned soups, micro waved foods contain more salt than you think.

The one positive side effect of all of this is the fact that more and more people are starting to become more aware of the amount of Sodium found in foods and are now starting to consume more and more lower Sodium alternatives. These foods are beginning to make more of an appearance on Supermarket shelves in greater numbers than ever before and slowly the message is getting through

However, and this is a BIG however, be careful of the excess use of salt substitutes as these contain potassium chloride (conventional table salt is Sodium Chloride). Potassium supplements are not suitable for people with impaired Kidney function, or people receiving ACE inhibitor drugs or certain types of diuretics (water pills).

There can be no doubt that the reduction of Salt has a beneficial effect on the blood pressure of people with Hypertension and the impact is greater in Adults over the age of 45 and in people of African and Caribbean origin, who in general are more salt sensitive.

Yes Salt is tasty, yes it can make some of our foods extremely tasty and delicious but yes, Salt can also be deadly.

Treat it and use it with care!

by Roberto Sedycias

What is blood pressure? It is the pressure that blood exerts on the walls of our blood vessels. Systolic blood pressure is measured when the heart contracts and diastolic blood pressure is measured when the heart relaxes.

These readings can be recorded on a monitor. When these readings go beyond a certain range, it spells danger. There are hardly any symptoms which indicate high or low blood pressure. In fact, high blood pressure or hypertension is called `the silent killer`. Hence, it is imperative for everyone to monitor their blood pressure regularly. This can be done by visiting a medical practitioner or at home also. Blood pressure kits are a revolution in this direction.

Studies have indicated that it is wiser to measure blood pressure at home with a blood pressure kit than to get it measured by a doctor in his clinic. Results are more accurate and trust-worthy. However, blood pressure kits need to be tested for accuracy from time to time. This can be done by comparing the readings between ones own blood pressure kit and one taken by a regular doctor at his clinic. The two readings must nearly be the same.

The device which measures blood pressure is called a sphygmomanometer. A cuff is wrapped around the arm and tightened by means of a pump. A stethoscope is placed on the artery near the elbow. The air pressure is then released. When the blood first gushes through the blood vessels gives the systolic reading. Diastolic reading is taken when the pulse stops. The acceptable reading on the blood pressure kit is 120/80.

There are a variety of blood pressure kits to choose from in the market. They vary in design, utility and price. Some blood pressure kits are manual while others are auto inflated. Depending on the technology used, the features that blood pressure kits offer are:

* Irregular heart beat feature

* Pressure rating feature

* A multiple number of memory readings

* Average reading feature

* Blood pressure classification

* Body fat percentage and BMI

* Time and date feature

* Alarm clock and thermometer

* Excessive motion detection

Most blood pressure kits measure blood pressure from the arm while some are used on the wrist and a few on the finger. Doctors suggest using the arm type blood pressure kit as the readings are more dependable. It is as if proximity to the heart gives a better result.

Finger type blood pressure kits are totally discarded now as they showed inaccurate readings. Again, a higher price does not necessarily mean a better product, and research shows that cheaper models of blood pressure kits give more accurate results.

In recent times, man has been drawn towards astrology. This has led to innovations in astrological medicine and treatment. A Rudraksha blood pressure kit has been developed which claims to control blood pressure quite efficiently, however, it lacks medical confirmation.

The Rudraksha blood pressure kit consists of two Rudraksha beads and a bloodstone pendant embedded in silver. The beads have to be soaked overnight in water. This water is to be consumed in the morning on an empty stomach.

The bloodstone pendant is to be worn around the neck in such a manner that the bloodstone remains in the area of the heart. Blood pressure is expected to stabilize within a few days. If we pay attention to the growing number of deaths due to hypertension, then purchase of a blood pressure kit becomes a must for one and all. However care must be taken to buy the proper and accurate blood pressure kit.

by Heather Colman

Blood pressure, which is a silent killer, is matter of concern and there are several drugs available, which can be used to combat blood pressure. One such drug is Toprol.

Read below to know more about how to use it effectively:

Toprol (or Toprol-XL) belongs to the group of drugs known as beta-blockers. These drugs directly affect the heart and blood circulation. Angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure) are the two ailments that are treated with Toprol. It is also used to treat and prevent cardiac arrests.

Before taking this medication you should inform your doctor, if you have certain health problems like:

Asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, or other respiratory problems, Diabetes, low blood pressure, any heart problem like heart block, sick sinus syndrome, congestive heart failure, Depression, Liver, kidney problems, Thyroid disorder, Myasthenia gravis, pheochromocytoma, and Raynaud's syndrome. Also toprol should be avoided during pregnancy, as it can harm the unborn baby. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy. Toprol can also pass onto breast milk, so avoid it if you are lactating.

How to take this medicine.

* Drink at least one full glass of water with every dose

* Take the daily dose at the same time

* Extended release tablets should not be crushed, chewed, or broken. Swallow the pill intact because it is made specially to release the medicine slowly over a long period of time.

* Try and not to skip a dose. Even more important, do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor's advise.

* Blood pressure should be checked regularly to make sure that Toprol is actually doing its job. Do not miss, to visit your doctor as advised.

* If you happen to need any type of surgery then inform the surgeon about taking Toprol, as it might be necessary to stop taking it for a short while.

* Toprol is usually combined with diet control and exercise programs when treating hypertension. So follow the other regimen as diligently as you take the medication.

* Hypertension has no noticeable symptoms. If you feel well then do not stop taking Toprol until your doctor says so. Unfortunately, some people need to keep taking blood pressure medication for their entire lives. However, always take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor.

Toprol should be stored at room temperature, in a cool and dry place. It is highly important that the use of Toprol is not cut off abruptly, without consulting a doctor first. A sudden stoppage can result in deterioration of the existing condition.

Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking Toprol as it can affect thinking and judgment. Alcohol is to be strictly avoided, when taking Toprol.

Since hypertension does not really have any symptoms that patients can determine on their own, it is very likely that during the course of the medication, a patient might feel so good, that the temptation to discontinue with the medication, will be strong. It is always suggested that, before making such important decisions, you consult your doctor.

Disclaimer – The information presented here should not be interpreted as or substituted for medical advice. Please talk to a qualified professional for more information about Toprol.

by Gary Gordon

Many of the vital signs monitor measure the following five main bodily functions:

• body temperature

• pulse rate

• respiration rate

• blood pressure

• blood oxygen saturation

Vital signs monitors enable healthcare professionals to evaluate their patients quickly, enabling them to progress to other tasks more efficiently and focus on improving the patient's health. The advanced technology engineered in vital signs monitors makes them optimal for hospitals. However, because these vital signs monitors are compact and portable, they're perfect for use in homes, clinics, at the sites of a medical emergencies, etc. With this state-of-the-art equipment now available to the public, vital signs monitors will be increasingly used in the home as patients can be monitored by family and friends and receive treatment from healthcare professionals where the patient feels most comfortable. If you're caring for someone at home, you'll find the following information pertinent to your tasks.

Using vital signs monitors will provide critical information about a patient's state of health. They are a way of quickly assessing how serious an illness is and how well the body is coping with the resulting biological stress. The more unstable the vital signs are, the sicker the patient is. Vital signs can also mark the state of chronic diseases (i.e. hypertension). When manually taking vital signs, it's important to remember that the slightest error can have dramatic results. If there is user error or patient error, an accident or a mistake, false readings will occur. If these are not remedied quickly, improper decisions and treatment could possibly be carried out. However, using vital signs monitors will eliminate such errors. Nonetheless, it is of the utmost importance to understand exactly what you are measuring.

Body Temperature is checked in order to:

• Gauge how well the body stores and releases heat.

• Detect abnormally high body temperature (hyperthermia) or abnormally low body temperature (hypothermia).

• Monitor the effectiveness of some medications.

Though normal body temperature varies from person to person, the average is 98.6 °F. Temperatures may vary throughout the day, ordinarily being lowest in the morning and rising in the evening.

Pulse Rate is described as the number of beats per minute (bpm):

• Provide clues about the function and health of the heart.

• Determine whether the heart is pumping blood adequately.

• Monitor certain symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath.

• Monitor medical conditions or the use of medications.

Respiration Rate is the rate at which a person breathes. The best time to measure this is when a person is resting. The normal rate for adults: 12-24 breaths per minute.

Blood Pressure measures the force of blood inside an artery in two measurements:

• Systolic Pressure – when blood flow is first heard, representing peak blood pressure that occurs when the heart contracts.

• Diastolic Pressure – when blood flow can no longer be heard, representing the lowest blood pressure that occurs when the heart relaxes between beats.

Blood Oxygen Saturation evaluates how well the lungs are providing oxygen to the blood during rest, exercise, or a medical procedure. Examines oxygenation and the saturation of hemoglobin in the blood

Low blood pressure happens when the blood flow to the brain and other vital organs falls short, due to low pressure in the blood. Some common causes of low blood pressure are dehydration, heavy meal, severe infection, heart attack, heart failure or pregnancy. You will notice some common sign and symptoms like dizziness, lack of concentration, nausea, blurred vision and many more.

- Home Remedies for Low Blood Pressure

• Drink as much water as you can. Dehydration minimizes the blood volume which causes the drop in pressure. Drink one glass of water per hour; this would help to keep your body hydrated.

• Keep your knees flexed as this helps in bringing the pressure back to normal.

• As you warm-up before exercising it is very important to cool down after exercising. Stopping in the middle of an exercise routine can drop your pressure, so avoid it.

• Drinking alcoholic beverages does not help the low blood pressure condition. Drink healthy juices or any non-alcoholic drinks which can make your life healthy and lot less complicated.

• Salt is good for low blood pressure. You can increase your salt intake, but this increase in salt may vary from person to person.

• While sleeping keep your head elevated as this may help to adapt to an upright position.

• Be health conscious and do stretching exercises which helps to keep a tab on the pressure level. You can squeeze your fists and pump your stomach a few times to help this problem.

• A larger meal causes the blood to rush towards the digestive area leading to insufficient supply of blood to other organs. Emphasis on smaller meals, as this would help to provide proper flow of blood in the entire body.

• Take a walk after your meals. This helps in bringing the blood pressure level to normal.

• Ginseng is a Chinese root, even though its benefits are still unclear, it has been said that it helps in improving low blood pressure.

• Soak 10 small raisins in bowl of water overnight. Chew each raisin at least 30 times before swallowing it. Continue doing this for a month.

• Soak 5 pieces of almond in water and keep it overnight. Grind them to make a smooth paste and mix it in glass of milk. Boil the almond and milk paste. Drink it warm.

Accuracy is the hallmark of such instruments, and if they are faulted in that respect, they are no measuring instruments at all! In addition, the job of monitoring should not be complicated. It should be easy, the procedure should be understandable and the results given should be accurate.
The task of monitoring blood pressure has been rendered easy with the advancement of modern technology. You can select from a number of models, the instrument that is suitable for you! The popular models are: wrist blood pressure monitors, automatic and manual digital blood pressure monitors, models with memory, print-out and graph monitors and mechanical blood pressure monitors.
f you are looking for ways of how to lower high blood pressure perhaps we should first talk about what causes high blood pressure in the first place. Well the truth is that there are many different causes ranging from, poor diet, lack of exercise, stress and hypertension. High blood pressure that is left untreated can lead to other more serious conditions, including stroke and heart attack. Having some knowledge of what causes high blood pressure will help you to avoid the risks.

Changing your diet and watching what you eat and drink will greatly help reduce high blood pressure. One of the major causes of high blood pressure is cholesterol. People with high levels of cholesterol are almost certain to have higher blood pressure when compared to someone with a healthy diet. Cholesterol causes fatty deposits to coat the artery walls. Over time these fats form into a hard plaque that reduces the size of arteries and blood vessels making them smaller and smaller. Your body still needs to pump the same amount of blood through these blood vessels, and this is what causes high blood pressure.

Another great way of how to lower high blood pressure is to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. We all like our sweets and desserts but here again simply by lowering your sugar intake can really help reduce high blood pressure. Eating high amounts of sugar or sugary foods causes your blood to thicken due to the glucose. If your blood is thicker than it normally should be it is again harder to circulate and so causes high blood pressure.

Another good way to help reduce high blood pressure is to cut down on other things that have been shown to be causes of high blood pressure. These include nicotine which is in cigarettes and other tobacco products. Excessive alcohol consumption has also been proved to increase the risk, so by lowering your alcohol intake it will also help reduce high blood pressure, as will cutting down on the amount of caffeine in your diet.

Exercise has also been shown to greatly help reduce high blood pressure, but always consult your Doctor or a medical professional before taking up any strenuous exercise programme, as the wrong type of exercise could make your symptoms worse. Weight lifting is something that should be avoided because this can be very stressful on the heart. Highly intensive cardiovascular workouts are also not good for people with high blood pressure as this type of workout greatly raises your blood pressure.

Moderate exercise is the best way, and over a period of time you will lower your cholesterol, your weight and therefore your blood pressure. Things like Yoga and slow movement exercises are especially good to help reduce high blood pressure as they are very heart friendly. Always practice warming up and cooling down exercises before, and after your main exercise as this slowly raises and lowers your blood pressure rather than causing dangerous spikes.

By using these simple tips on diet and exercise you will be well on your way to achieving a more normal range blood pressure level and also help reduce high blood pressure in the future.

Next time you are with a group of 3 friends, take a good look around; one of you will have high blood pressure. The sad part is, since there are no symptoms, you may not even be aware of it. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, congestive heart failure, stroke, or kidney failure. Various risk factors contribute to this disease that are both under our control, and out of our control. The only way to determine if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked. The insidious nature of this disease makes it a true Silent Killer.

The brain requires unobstructed blood flow to nourish its many functions. Very high, sustained blood pressure will eventually cause blood vessels to weaken. Over time these weaken vessels can break, and blood will leak into the brain. The area of the brain that is being fed by these broken vessels start to die, and this will cause a stroke. Additionally, if a blot clot blocks a narrowed artery, blood ceases to flow and a stroke will occur. Symptoms of a stroke include sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body, confusion, trouble speaking, or seeing, sudden severe headache. If you or someone with you has one or more of these signs, don't delay, call 911.

Like the brain, the heart requires blood to bring oxygen, and nutrients to its muscle tissue. The narrowing of the arteries due to blockage can cause high blood pressure. If this blockage occurs in the arteries of the heart, coronary arteries, heart muscle damage can occur, resulting in a heart attack. Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, however most heart attacks start slowly with mild pain and discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. Shortness of breath may occur, as well as nausea, or lightheadedness. It is vital to get help immediately if any of these symptoms occur.

The kidneys act as filters to rid the body of all waste products. Eventually, high blood pressure can thicken, then narrow the blood vessels of the kidneys. The kidneys becomes less efficient, filtering less fluid, and waste builds up in the blood. Over time, the kidneys may fail altogether. When this happens, medical treatment such as dialysis, or a kidney transplant may be needed.

The best way to find out if you have high blood pressure is by having your blood pressure checked regularly. Generally speaking, doctors will diagnose a person with high blood pressure on the basis of two or more readings, taken on different occasions. A consistent blood pressure reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher is considered high blood pressure, or hypertensive. It is vital to take steps to keep your blood pressure under control. The treatment goal is blood pressure below 140/90 and lower for people with other conditions, such as diabetes and kidney disease.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle including healthy eating habits, reducing salt in the diet, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, being physically active, and quitting smoking is an effective step in preventing and controlling high blood pressure. If lifestyle improvements alone are not sufficient in keeping pressure controlled, it may be necessary to add blood pressure medications. There are several options that physicians have at their disposal, and each option should be discussed, as to their side effects and efficacy.

by Peter rodrick

Blood pressure is the measure of the pressure against the walls of the arteries. There are two forces that form blood pressure. One of the forces is created when the heart pumps blood into the arteries through the circulatory system. The other force is due to the arteries as they resist the flow of blood. Blood pressure is always stated in two numbers, systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. The higher number is systolic pressure which represents the pressure while heart contracts to pump the blood to the body. The lower number is the diastolic pressure which represents the pressure when heart relaxes between the beats.

What is High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)?

High blood pressure or hypertension means high pressure or tension within the arteries. Arteries are the vessels that carry blood from heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure usually has no visible symptoms. There are lots of people whose blood pressures are high, but they do not realize it until it is too late. For this reason, high blood pressure is also called as the silent killer. Hypertension damages the blood vessels. This in turn risks heart disease, heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. So it is very necessary for one to reduce blood pressure.

Methods to Reduce Blood Pressure

Various scientific studies have shown that following are some of the effective ways one could reduce blood pressure:

1. Weight loss if obese or overweight : It is very important for one to reduce weight if one is obese or overweight. Weight impacts the strain on the heart which disturbs the pumping of blood due to which the pressure increases.

2. Restriction on intake of sodium : The intake of sodium should be restricted or in limit as sodium increases the blood pressure. Sodium intake causes water retention in the body. It is advisable to check the labels of the food packets like potato chips, bread, cheese, etc before buying them. Sodium mustn't be there in the ingredients. Limit intake of sodium to 1,500 to 2,400 milligrams per day.

3. Increase intake of potassium, magnesium and calcium : A proper intake of minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium helps proper functioning of heart, due to which blood circulation increases and chances of high blood pressure decreases.

4. Reduce or stop intake of alcohol : Avoid alcohol as much as possible. If you cannot avoid it completely, you must limit it to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.

5. Limit intake of caffeine : Excessive intake of caffeine creates acidity causing stress on heart. This stress may increase the blood pressure.

6. Regular physical exercise : Regular exercise not only increases the blood circulation but also helps in maintaining the weight. It helps the body to perform its functions normally.

7. Increase the consumption of fruits, vegetables and fiber rich food : Increase in consumption of fruits, vegetables and fiber rich foods increases the energy required for the body to perform activity.

8. Cut down high cholesterol and high fat foods : Cholesterol and fats build up blocks in the heart which reduces the circulation of blood from the heart.

9. Stop smoking and stop intake of tobacco : Cigarettes contains nicotine. Nicotine and tobacco causes blood vessels to constrict and your heart to beat faster, which raises your blood pressure.

10. Reduce stress in your life : Reduce the stress in your life as much as possible by relaxation technique, biofeedback or just by avoiding stressful situations and conditions.

Reduce Blood Pressure – Some Treatment Approaches

To treat patient with blood pressure, one should be check if the patient is diabetic or not.

Diabetes increases the chances of cardiovascular disease. So control of blood pressure in diabetes is tougher. The goals for treatment in blood pressure are:-

For diabetic patients:

Systolic pressure: less than 140mg

Diastolic pressure: less than 85mg

For non-diabetic patients:

Systolic pressure: less than 130mg

Diastolic pressure: less than 80mg

Medicinal methods that are used to treat patient with blood pressure are:

1. ACE inhibitors : ACE inhibitors stop the production of hormone called angiotensin. Angiotensin causes the narrowing of blood vessels. ACE inhibitors expand the blood vessels and improve the blood flow.

2. Beta blockers : Beta blockers block the effect of hormone adrenaline and help in conditioning the nervous system of the body. Due to this the heart relaxes and beats slowly and thus the blood pressure reduces.

3. Alpha blockers : It causes blood vessels to widen and relax. It is generally a good combination with beta blockers for effect on resistance of circulation.

4. Calcium channel blockers : It reduces the muscle tension in the arteries, expanding them and creating more room for blood circulation. It also relaxes the heart muscles, reducing the blood pressure.

5. Diuretics : It helps to get rid of salts and excessive fluids through kidney. Helping the blood vessels to relax and reducing strain on blood circulation.
